As the show drew to a close, torn crepe paper and broken eggshells littered the ground. Laura Scott* and Jesse Taylor*, winners of the two dollar-bill ride classes, were several dollars richer. Horses had been rearranged to allow all the competitors to have their horses in a stall or turned out while the riders partied. Brightly-colored ribbons fluttered from trucks, trailers, stalls, and the hands of the children. I wiped a sheen of sweat off my brow, content that everything had gone well but a bit unhappy at the unusually hot weather. I’d moved to England to get away from this heat!
Kit Westing*, one of my riders who had opted not to ride in the fun show, had volunteered to get the grill going and to set out the food that I’d bought or prepared over the last few days. It seemed like enough to feed a small army: hamburgers and hot dogs, skewers of vegetable chunks for kebabs, potato salad and egg salad and chicken salad, chips and dip and Chex Mix from Shelly, vast amounts of vegetable stir fry from Maya, cornbread and BBQ ribs and delicious-looking frozen fruit punch from Nicole and her crew, pork and shrimp wontons and chicken enchiladas and tuna noodle salad from Elise. I’d mixed up bowls of taco salad and “regular” salad just that morning, before heading out the barn to get all the kids ready to show. That didn’t even include dessert: Maya had brought what seemed like millions of brownies and Elise had brought all different kinds of cupcakes. I’d bought a few gallons of ice cream with various toppings and made a cold fruit tart as well. Forget a small army – we could feed a rather large army with all this food.
With their horses put away, happily munching at hay after finishing their grain, the kids ran off with the Twister game and the net and balls and racquets for volleyball and badminton that Nicole had wisely provided. I thought I saw two of my riders, sixteen-year-olds Alex Williams* and Christina Westphal*, sneaking off together, but I certainly wasn’t going to say anything.
“Is the grill ready?” I asked Kit*, hungry myself after a long day of coaching and showing and facilitating. Even fun shows are a lot of work.
“Sure is,” he replied. “I was just getting ready to put the first of the burgers and veggies on. Tell everyone to start digging in to the rest of the spread. I’ll get some in a bit.”
“Okay.” Pitching my voice a bit louder, I called out, “FOOD!”
That was all it took for the kids to come running and the group of my friends huddled laughing over a game of Apples to Apples to come running, forming a mass in front of the food table. Plates were filled, happy chatter ensued, delicious food was eaten.
“Great show, Rainbow!” Nicole called to me after swallowing a bite of hamburger. “My crew really had fun – I did too. Plus the party’s great.”
“Thanks,” I replied around my own mouthful of grilled veggies. “I’m glad you guys enjoyed it.”
As people slowly finished eating, I realized that we couldn’t have fed a small army: not much food remained on the tables. There were a few stray chips and a lone hot dog, a few shreds of lettuce that had fallen to the ground. Aside from that, the plates and bowls had been scraped clean. Of course, none of the desserts were left!
When the last plate had been gathered up and the last serving dish returned to its rightful owner, Maya stood on a chair. “Hey, everybody! I’ve been preparing a scavenger hunt for you all. Get in teams of two or three, and then come over here to get the checklist!” Everyone quickly divided up into teams, even we more restrained adults mixing with the children in the line to get the checklist.
For a few moments, we glanced over the checklist silently. Some of the items would not be too difficult to find: an acorn, a piece of crepe paper from the crepe paper ride, something made by Ariat, a spare snaffle bit. Other items were more difficult: a purple pen, a teabag (though that shouldn’t be TOO difficult; WEC is in England after all!), a coin from a country other than the US, England, or Canada, a piece of tack more than 25 years old, a black-and-white photograph.
As it got dark, Maya passed out flashlights to all the teams. The list of items for us to find was long. The kids, still with plenty of energy even after the show day, rushed around, grabbing acorns and Ariat boots. Shelly had a ten eurocent piece from a recent trip to France. I had my first saddle, a Passier built in 1980. Slowly, each team drifted back to the patch of lawn where we’d eaten dinner. When it was all said and done, Lilly Craft*, Mary Louise Kaltenbach*, and Aurianna Cooper* won, having gathered the most items – managing to find a purple pen in Lilly*’s backpack, a black-and-white photograph that Christina Westphal* had taken of Alex Williams*, and a Mexican peso.
After they were duly congratulated, a few groups took off, while others remained scattered around, playing volleyball and Apples to Apples. I stood with my hands on my hips and surveyed the happy scene. Nodding to myself, I headed over to join the game of Apples to Apples. It had been a good day.
Congratulations to everyone who came and thank you for coming! Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day.
